                                        NATIONAL ACCOUNTS STATISTICS

The National Accounts Unit of the CSO compiles and disseminates annual and quarterly estimates of gross domestic product, from both the production and expenditure approaches, at current and constant 1993/94 prices. Additional details by output, intermediate consumption, value added and gross capital formation is also published for each industry, according to Botswana Standard Industrial Classification, an adaptation of the International Standard Industrial Classification Revision 2. In general, Botswana national accounts estimates are still largely compiled in accordance with the concepts and definitions of the United Nations System of National Accounts 1968 although some efforts to fully adopt the 1993 SNA are being undertaken. Botswana national accounts are produced on calendar year basis since first quarter of 2009.

The compilation of annual and quarterly national accounts is based on a combination of data from surveys and administrative records. The CSO maintains an Enterprise and Establishment Register which keeps a list of all enterprises and establishments in Botswana and serve as a sample frame for annual and quarterly business surveys, the most important of which being the Annual Economic Survey and the Survey of Recent Trends. The surveys are on an enterprise/establishment basis and the compilation of GDP by production approach is mainly based on them.

The time series data is as given below:
